Year 6 2024 - 2025

Welcome to the Year 6 Class Page

Dear parents and carers,

We would like to welcome you to the Year 6 class page.

We are delighted to be back and are very much looking forward to a successful year.

This year, as we lead up to SATS, it is more important than ever that we identify any areas your child is struggling with. Children will be given weekly homework tasks, set on Friday and due on Monday.  Over the year, the home learning activities will cover a range of subjects across the curriculum, emphasising reading comprehension, grammar, punctuation, spelling, mental maths, and mathematical reasoning.

The presentation and effort put into homework should meet the same standards as expected in the class.

Weekly spelling tests will take place on Thursday.

We will be focusing on the Year 6 spelling patterns and the statutory lists of keywords. These keywords can be found here:SpellingWordList_Y5-6.pdf (oxfordowl.co.uk)

Daily reading is non-negotiable, and reading records must be in school daily so that they can be checked. We encourage you to read with your child as much as possible. It feeds their imaginations, builds their confidence and increases their understanding of vocabulary and language. For book recommendations, please visit Best Books for Year 6 | Ages 10-11 | The Reader Teacher

Please make sure that their reading diary is signed weekly.

Children will have PE every Thursday and Friday. Any changes to these days will be posted on Class Dojo in advance.

Appropriate clothing must be worn for all PE activities (black/navy shorts, a plain white t-shirt, and jogging pants may be worn in cold weather).

Indoors: - No jewellery, bare feet or black pumps, black or navy shorts, white shirt, or leggings may be worn under shorts.

Outdoors: - No jewellery. Plimsolls or trainers, shorts (leggings may be worn under shorts) and t-shirts (tracksuit/joggers in certain conditions).

We look forward to a productive and enjoyable year with your children. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask. Thank you for your continued support.

Miss McGowan and Mrs Di Rosa

The Year 6 Curriculum cross-curricular themes are Rule Britannia (Autumn term), Mayans/ Volcanoes  (Spring term), and WW2 (Summer term). The children will complete home learning power projects throughout the year based on these topics.
