Expectations

Year 5 is an important year in which children will be encouraged to become increasingly independent, resilient and responsible learners. We have lots of exciting learning planned and look forward to working closely with you to support your child throughout the year!

Reading at home

Reading regularly is really important in Year 5. We encourage children to read at home as often as they can and to chat with an adult about what they’ve been reading.

Your child will have a reading book bag, and their individual reading days will be written on it. Please make sure they bring their reading book and reading record into school on these days. This means we can hear them read, keep track of their progress and change their book when needed.

P.E. Kit

Children will need their P.E. kit in school on Tuesdays and Fridays.

They should have:

  • A plain white T-shirt

  • Black or navy shorts

  • Trainers

  • Tracksuit bottoms and a sweatshirt for colder weather

Please ensure that all jewellery, including earrings, necklaces and watches, is removed before P.E. lessons.

Homework will be sent home every Wednesday and will need to be returned to school by the next week.

Homework will include a mixture of activities linked to our learning in school, including:

  • Mathematics

  • Reading and comprehension

  • Spellings

Please encourage your child to complete their homework independently where possible, while supporting them if they need help.

What We Are Learning This Term

Literacy

We will explore poetry through poems by Simon Armitage. We will also develop instructional writing through How to Train Your Dragon; we will develop our narrative writing through Windrush Child by Benjamin Zephaniah before moving on to explanation texts linked to our Space topic. Spelling, punctuation and grammar will continue to be developed throughout the term

Maths

We will develop our understanding of multiplication, division and fractions, while continuing to build fluency with times tables, written methods, reasoning and problem-solving.

RE

Our RE topic is Prophecy and Promise, exploring Old Testament prophecies and God's promises and considering their importance to Christians today.

Science

Our topic is Forces and Space, where we will investigate gravity, air resistance, water resistance and friction, as well as simple mechanisms such as levers, pulleys and gears. We will also explore the Earth, Moon and Sun, including their movement and how this affects our understanding of day and night.

History

We will travel back in time to explore the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings, investigating why they invaded Britain, how they lived and the impact they had on our history.

Geography

We will study our local area, developing our fieldwork skills through maps, surveys and investigations of human and physical features.

Art and Design Technology

Children will create exciting textile and mixed-media projects, experimenting with different materials, techniques and artistic processes.

Computing

We will create spread sheets and stop-animation films and develop programming skills by learning about variables and interactive projects.

PSHE

We will focus on independence and resilience, encouraging children to recognise their strengths, take responsibility and make positive choices.

Music

Children will develop their singing, rhythm, expression and performance skills through music from a range of styles.

Spanish

Our topic is Time in the City, where children will learn to tell the time, give directions and describe places around a town or city.

We are excited about everything Year 5 has to offer and look forward to seeing the children grow in confidence, independence and resilience throughout the year.
