Spring 2026 - Curriculum
Year 2
Welcome back. We hope you had a Happy and Holy Christmas.
We are looking forward to the new term.
This Term, our topic will be the Great Fire of London.
Literacy – We will link our writing to our topic. We will write a Narrative based on the story we are reading - Toby and the Great Fire of London.
We will also be writing our own poems based on the Great Fire.
In Spring 2 we will write fire instructions and a recount of a visit.
Maths - we continue to use White Rose Maths - we will cover money, multiplication and division, length and height, mass, capacity and temperature.
RE – We continue to use the New Religious Education Directory. Year 2 will use the resources from the Oxford University Press. In Branch 3, we will focus on Galilee to Jerusalem. In this unit we will learn about Jesus' Baptism, his miracles, saying sorry and forgiveness. In Branch 4 Desert to garden, thinking about reconciliation, Lent, the events of Holy Week and the Resurrection.
History – We will learn about the Great Fire of London. Our objectives are:
To explain why the Great Fire started and how we know what happened.
Describe what happened during the Great Fire and how we know.
Explain why the Great Fire burned down so many houses.
To question why the Great Fire burned down so many houses.
To describe how people managed to live through the Great Fire.
Suggest how we rebuild London after the Great Fire using evidence.
Geography - We will be looking at the United Kingdom. We will find the location of the four countries. Learn about the four capitals and the surrounding seas. Find out about the human and physical features of the UK and the human and physical features of the capital cities.
Science – We will learn about plants and then living things and their habitats.
Music – We will be using Charanga,
PSHE – We will be beginning work from the new Ten Ten curriculum.
PE - Our PE will be the Great Fire of London dance, Object control and wall and net games.
Homework
The homework will be set each week each Friday to be completed by the following Wednesday. We will send spellings, a literacy or comprehension sheet and a maths sheet. There will be a weekly spelling and times tables test every Thursday and a maths sheet that will focus on the maths topic we have been covering this week.
Reading Books
We will send home weekly reading books. The children have a specific reading day on which they are to bring their reading book in. The expectation is that children in Year 2 should read at home every day. A record of this can be kept in the children’s reading record. We are aiming to foster a love of reading in the children.
Please, whenever possible, read to your children. They will absolutely love this and they enjoy being a regular reader.
This Friday is Enterprise Day. Every class has made something to sell and the proceeds will all go to the Caritas Advent Appeal. We look forward to seeing you there.
The children love to be our prayer person and lead the prayers for the day.
Our Class prayers are:
Maths - In maths we will be completing work on addition and subtraction. We will then learn about shapes and their properties.
Literacy – We will be linking our writing to our topic. which is World War 2. We will be writing letters and recipe writing, looking at recipes from World War 2.
RE – We are now using the New Religious Education Directory. Year 2 use the resources from the Oxford University Press. In Branch 1, we focused on Creation to Covenant. This half-term we will be looking at Prophecy and Promise. In this unit we will learn about the prophets discuss the visitation, Advent and the Nativity story through Luke's Gospel.
History – Our topic is World War Two. We have been learning about refugees and what happened to them during the war. We have looked at what women did during the war.
Geography - We will be looking at the local area and comparing rural and urban areas. We will look at maps and create a map of our local area.
Science – We will be completing our topic on humans. We will then move on to materials and their uses.
Music – We will be using Charanga and learning some Christmas songs.
PSHE – We will be beginning work from the new Ten Ten curriculum.
PE - Our PE will be Gymnastics and racket skills.

There will be a weekly spelling and times tables test every Thursday and a maths sheet that will focus on the maths topic we have been covering this week.

P.E. kits
Children will need to come to school in their P.E. kits every Tuesday and Wednesday.
They MUST have the correct P.E. kit for outdoor games – a plain white t-shirt, black or blue shorts (or plain tracksuit bottoms and top when it gets colder).

Dear Parents/Carers,
Your child should have a Login for Times Tables Rockstars home. This is a brilliant and fun way for your child to work on their times tables at home. Please encourage your children to use this on a regular basis as part of their homework.
If you have any questions please ask a member of staff from Year 2 and they will try to help you.
